The Disregarded Powerhouse in Kenya

Many young people in Kenya from time immemorial have struggled to find jobs away from the rural economy. There is evidence of recorded media showing young people flocking Nairobi in the 1980s to secure work and income. The tune has not changed. Nairobi continues to be place where youth migrate to find skilled and unskilled jobs. Now, the counties are a new frontier for more work opportunities.

Government attempts to integrate the youth in the economy has not been without challenges. Kazi mtaani and the hustler fund efforts are examples of recent government strategies for youth. The private secor too is a thriving avenue for integrating youth in jobs. But many youths remain unemployed or lacking valuable work options. It would almost seem that they are disregarded in the economic grid.

To disregard millions of a youth constituent is overlooking the strength of a nation. But to be regarded by whom? This would point to questioning the role of government and private sectors in assimilating youth population in employment. Perhaps the bigger question is the role of education and economic environment that youth can explore for work. What is the state of entrepreneurship, informal job sectors? Are youth failing to interpret the work environment in Kenyan sectors of economy in the context of education they receive? Or is the education sector failing to interpret the economy of Kenya?

These queries arising may not have quick answers, but it is irrefutable that the youth are a powerhouse. They are a human resource that can translate into a million times purchasing power, labor, revenues and jobs created.

There is need to recognize this population in public discourse not as a disregarded lot but as a highly regarded constituent and resource.
